Later, in 1988, they switched to an automatic Zenith El Primero movement. It wasn't until the year 2000 that they began developing the Daytonas with their own in-house Rolex movement. The first, early Daytonas were actually just called Cosmograph. It wasn't until 1970 that Rolex decided to name the watch Daytona after the Daytona Speedway, which Rolex has been sponsoring for over 15 years. It was in the mid-1980's, when Paul Newman was photographed wearing his Daytona, that its popularity really grew. The Daytona has been used by many celebrities in many movies, and it's been said that it's possibly the most popular celebrity watch around the world.
